India-based broadcast technology services provider Essel Shyam has sourced its Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) solution from telecom technology and services leader Ericsson to bring the cricketing action in the ongoing Indian Premier League Twenty 20 (IPL T20) in high definition.
Essel is managing the entire digital news gathering for the series, harnessing the Ericsson EN8040 HD DSNG solution. The EN8040 provides a multi-format encoding platform combined with an advanced satellite modulator. For flexibility, the EN8040 can offer MEPG-2 SD, MPEG-4 AVC SD and MEPG-4 AVC HD video encoding in the same box.

Full HD ( 1080p) television sets have just become available to Indian customers -- prices for 32 inch and 40 inch LED HD TVs are still pricey – upward of Rs 40,000 ($ 900- 1000) – but falling by the day. However , not too many Cable TV providers are yet offering HD content. The Chennai-based Sun DirectToHome satellite dish TV service is the first to offer IPL – and a few channels like Discovery and Indian language movies in HD.
