Coming to India - 4
There have been a flurry of recent announcements by global tech companies opening development and work centres in India
April 2, 2022: Amazon has opened yet another facility in Tamil Nadu --its 4th -- spread across 8.3 lakh square feet and 18 floors in the World Trade Centre, Centre, in Chennai, on March 29. It will support over 6000 employees and is second in size only to the Amazon centre in Hyderabad.
Inaugurating the facility Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said: "The latest expansion and investment will bind both the economic and social well-being of the state. We welcome this development from Amazon, and congratulate them on launching their new office.”
Amazon first began operations in Tamil Nadu in 2005, with close to 50 employees based in Chennai, a numbet that is over 14,000 today.Amazon has two corporate offices in Old Mahabalipuram Road in Chennai and one office in Saravanampatti in Coimbatore.
The new office building in WTC features state-of-the-art design and facilities that will operate with significantly lower costs than any conventional building by incorporating internationally recognized building standards. These standards allow an estimated 23% reduction in annual energy consumption and a 76% reduction in drinking water consumption. This will further contribute to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the office building.
In 2021, Amazon setup its first devices manufacturing unit in India in the state of Tamil Nadu. Hundreds of thousands of Fire TV Stick devices are manufactured in this facility.
In addition to engineering and customer support, the new Amazon Chennai centre is expected to provide R&D support for Amazon devices like the Echo range of smart speakers, which have seen significant amounts of Indianization.
